Summerhill Arabians is a small Straight Egyptian Arabian horse breeding farm in Tucson, AZ. It is remarkable for being so conveniently located within Tucson, yet creating the illusion of being isolated in the countryside. Summerhill Arabians is hidden in a dense mesquite bosque along the Rillito River, within view of the Bamford home which stands on a prominent ridge above. Summerhill Arabians is owned by Sharon and Colin Bamford. Although Sharon and Colin each had had a previous background with other horse breeds, neither had much prior experience with Arabian horses. In 1992 Colin, while hiking alone in the rugged Santa Rita Mountains, climbed a hillcrest and was surprised to find green pastures on the other side. While sitting, resting, taking in the view, Colin was mesmerized by these white horses, with arched necks and tails held high, frolicking in the pastures below. A journey was started. And the love for the Arabian horses began. With a modest budget, mostly good and some bad luck, good and bad decisions and input from some good friends and experts, Sharon and Colin began to purchase a few large-bodied, well-balanced Straight Egyptian mares with good blood lines. Consistently breeding to Straight Egyptian quality Arabian stallions has produced a small herd that the Bamford’s are proud of, with progeny competing well both regionally and nationally. Summerhill Arabians is home to a small enough number of these Arabian horses to permit each horse to receive individual attention. Each foal is imprinted at birth. The youngsters are handled frequently and gently and receive moderate conditioning. Selected horses are conditioned and shown in halter classes by the Bamfords and by Gary McDonald. Selected Arabian horses are shown in performance classes. All mature horses are expected to be well-mannered and sound on the trail. Broodmares are under saddle and have off-seasons for recovery and re-conditioning. Summerhill Arabian stallions are expected to behave like gentlemen and athletes, as well as being phenotypically and genotypically fine specimens for reproduction. When the “Arabian Horses For Sale” sign goes up at Summerhill Arabians, it goes up with some sorrow and a great deal of pride. Sharon, Colin and the staff will sorely miss the youngsters but will be satisfied knowing that they went to a suitable buyer, environment and trainer. Sharon and Colin are confident that these youngsters will perform well and make their new owners happy and proud of this breed—the Arabian horse. Summerhill Arabians purebred Arabian breeding stallions are AMIR SHAMEZ, who comes from the Shaikh al Badi and Ansata el Sherif lines, and IMMASERADI, who comes from the Ansata Imperial and Abenhetep lines.
